Even if you like the particular patterned paper you're using, don't be afraid to give it a torn page look to add interest and texture.

I couldn't think of anything to journal so I typed up the enlisted swearing in oath.  Try this!  When typing up your journaling, change the size and font of important words to add emphasis.

I don't have any advice about this page, I just love guys in uniform!  (*sigh*)

You can use pin in your scrapbook pages like brads.  All you need to do is punch the pin through and turn the paper over so the pointy side is up and take your trusty hammer and whack the pointy side down flat.  It'll hold anything it's attached to but make sure it's where you want it for sure because once it's stuck, it's STUCK!

I used bookplates as tiny frames for important key words to add a little flair to a fancier page.
