Quilling A technique where thin strips of paper are rolled up to make shapes and objects.

Removable Adhesive Adhesive that is not permanent. It's great for rearranging a layout. It comes in roll type cartridges and double sided tape.
Ribbon Woven material in long strips. See Fibers.
Ric Rac A wavy ribbon. Used in embellishing. See Fibers.
Rotary Blade A tool usually used in fabric cutting but can be used to free hand cut paper from patterns as well. Make sure you use a cutting mat to keep your table safe.
Rub-On Transfers Clip Art, letters, or phrases that are made to be applied to surfaces (such as paper, metal, buttons, etc.) by rubbing them on face down with a blunt tool like a flat stick. You rub across the back of the transfer until the design has been adhered. It's like a sticker but looks more professional.
Runner Type Adhesive A hand held cartridge that when rolled across paper, tip down, a thin, smooth film of glue is applied. It’s quick and clean. You control the amount rolled out. It’s perfect for an all purpose adhesive for your scrapbook. You can also buy refill cartridges.

Sanding A distressing technique that roughs up the surface of paper or stickers. It adds character and texture to your layout. Use sandpaper, sanding blocks, or emery boards to achieve this effect.

Scrapper's Block Comparible to writer's block. When you just don't feel very creative and cannot seem to finish a layout or project. Cures include looking at other scrapbooks or layouts, craft books, scrapbook magazines, or just plain take a break!
Shabby Chic A scrapbook design style that includes distressing or sanding to give your layout a worn or vintage look.
Shape Cutter A hand held tool that you use to cut out paper by guiding it around a shape template.

Slide Frame Small frames that are the size of photo slides. Used in embellishing.

Snaps A fastener just like the ones used on clothing.
Specialty Paper Most scrapbook stores will refer to non essential paper as specialty paper. It includes mulberry and vellum, but also sparkly glitter paper, mirrored finish paper, and handmade with botanicals paper.
Spiral Bound Album Scrapbooks that are bound by a spiral of wire(s). These scrapbooks let you decorate the cover but you cannot rearrange the layouts once attached.
Sponging A technique that involves smearing ink on a piece of paper or embellishment with a sponge, usually just around the edges.
Spray Adhesive A very handy adhesive that you can spray on. Works great with delicate items like pressed flowers or fabric swatches.
Stamps A block used to imprint a design. They used to only be made of wood and rubber but are now being made of clear acrylic or foam.
Stencils A cut out surface (usually plastic) that you can apply a design by brushing ink or paint through.
Stickers Self adhering pictures, shapes or letters. Stickers are not only two dimensional but can be 3-D, made of cloth, wood, metal, you name it.
Stitching Using thread in your layout, usually with a sewing machine but can be hand stitched.
Straight Edged Scissors Non craft scissors. Regular ones with a nice sharp blade.
Strap Bound Album Scrapbook with the pages attached with straps like little belts on the binding. Can be expanded.
Stylus A stick with blunt, rounded ends used to dry emboss vellum paper. Also called a dry embossing tool.

Templates Similar to a stencil in that you trace around the edge of a hard plastic with a cut out. Templates can come in shapes and letters as well as paper craft items such as tags, envelopes and paper box cut outs. See Stencils.
Texture The feel of a paper or fabric that is not just flat. Adding different textures can add interest to your layouts.
Theme What your layout or scrapbook is focused on. It can be determined by your photos, what embellishments are used, or even the color scheme.

Tools Any materials used to create a scrapbook but are not included in the finished product such as scissors, paper cutters, punches, etc.
Torn Edge A very popular look that involves tearing the side of a paper into a strip and attaching the piece with the white fibers showing to your layout.
Transparency Clear sheet of semi rigid plastic with printing on it. You can buy them printed or make your own by taking in a computer printout to a copy store
and ask them to turn it into a transparency.
Twine A rough, rope-like fiber.See Fibers.

Vellum Vellum is made from wood and cotton pulp like most paper. The difference being is that vellum is specially treated to give it a transparent look. It is referred to as the clear sheets or “see through” paper. It comes in a variety of colors and can be embossed or have a pattern. It’s great for computer printing
and layering over opaque papers.
Velveteen Specialty paper with a velvet like feel.
Versamark Similar to a stamp pad but does not contain ink. Instead it has a mild adhesive that when applied to a solid color cardstock the stamp's image is
a shade darker, like a watermark. This is great to use for easy embossing as well.
Vivelle Specialty paper with a thick fabric feel.

Wire Long, thin, ropes of metal. It can be looped or beaded or spiraled to create your own embellishments.
X
X-acto Knife Thin tool with a sharp blade attached at the end to free hand cut around a pattern, template, or stencil.
Xyron Machine Machine that laminates or turns any two dimentional cutout into a sticker. A very handy tool.
