Jewels Small, synthetic gemstones that are glued to pages to give layouts a little sparkle. Also known as "bling," but I never call it that.

Journaling
Words on scrapbook pages. They can be small captions or sayings, poems, stories, long descriptions, or even music lyrics.

Label maker
A tool used in making labels. There is the old timey kind that has the dial and you get a label with raised lettering, a very creative way to journal small captions or names. There is also the label maker that is computerized and works as a small printer which also can be useful in journaling.

Labels
A brief discription given to identify what is being shown. In scrapbooking labels usually refer to photos.

Layout
Another word for scrapbook page(s). It can also mean what is on your scrapbook pages. "Here is the layout of my layout."

Lignin
The bonding element that naturally holds wood fibers together. It's found in newsprint, cheap paperback books and old documents.

Lignin Free
Paper made without lignin. See Acid Free, Archival Quality, and Photo Safe.

Liquid Glue
Adhesive in liquid form. Best for thicker embellishments and fibers. Do not use liquid glue on vellum or mulberry because it will alter the look, unless you want it to be altered.

Matting
Placing a photograph or embellishment on a contrasting paper that is slightly larger to create a border or a frame. The mat color should be contrasting to the background as well.

Memorabilia
Any personal items added to a layout such as a lock of baby hair, an award ribbon, a ticket stub, etc.

Mini Album
Small handmade scrapbooks that are dedicated to a certain theme, event, or person.

Mosaic
Technique where you cut photos or paper into small pieces and then put them together with a little space in between each piece.

Mounting
Adhering a photograph, embellishment or other item to a piece of paper or another item.

Mounting Squares
Adhesive squares that are sticky on both sides. Great for mounting photos.

Mulberry
Mulberry paper is fibrous and has a handmade feel to it. It can be described as a tissue paper that’s soft to the touch. It usually comes in solid colors. It can add a subtle texture when layered in your scrapbook pages.

Name Plate Holder
A small metal frame that was once used as a label holder on the sides of boxes or books.

Opaque Pen
A pen that can write with dense ink and is visible on dark paper.

P


Page Protector
Also called sheet protectors. They are made of plastic to slip a finished scrapbook page into. They can be side loading or top loading, the latter being more popular, and fit 8 1/2 x 11” or 12 x 12” pages. Many scrapbooks of all sizes have page protectors already attached inside. Be aware of finding refill sheets if buying a smaller sized scrapbook.

Paper Chopper
A paper cutter that has a long arm that lifts up and chops down on the overhanging paper. Small paper choppers are good for cropping photos.

Paper Clips
In scrapbooking, they are ornamental and come in swirly patterns. They clip on just like office supply paper clips but add a little more pizazz with their designs.

Paper Crafts
Creating with paper. Usually referring to card making but can be anything crafty that includes paper.

Paper Cutter
Tool that is used to measure and cut straight lines across paper. It comes in various sizes with scoring and decorative blades as well.

Paper Quills

Pens
Anything used to handwrite your journaling on your layout.

Photo Corners
Embellishments that are corner shaped and usually self adhesived. They either have small pockets to hold a photo in place or are purely decorative to add the corners of your picture.

Photo Safe
Similar to archival quality but more specific to scrapbooking. See Acid Free.

Pigment Ink
Thick ink pad that takes longer to dry but is more permanent than regular ink. A good brand is "Staz On" (pronounced 'stays on'). It is great for crafting with stamps.

Pins
Metal pins that are fastened to your layout. It can be personal memorabilia or safety pins that hold a small charm.

Pockets
Usually made of paper, pockets are created on pages to hold other items like pictures or memorabilia. You adhere (glue or stitching) the two sides and bottom of a smaller piece of paper to your background and you have an instant pocket.

Polymer Clay
Clay used to make embellishments. It is rolled and formed into desired shapes and baked to harden. Then you can paint or ink it.

Pop Dots
Thin foam with adhesive on both sides used for adhering embellishments and raising them just a little to give your layout some depth and dimention. They usually come in circles like dots but can be found in other shapes as well.

Post Bound Album
Scrapbooks that are held together with metal posts that run through the pages and are expandable

Pressed Flowers
Real flowers that have been pressed in a flower press (or by other means ie. in a phone book or book binder etc.) and can be carefully attached to scrapbook pages for embellishing. Spray adhesive works best.

Punches
A small hand held tool that cuts small shapes by punching through the paper. The shape created is also referred to as a punch.
