ATG Gun
From Scotch (3M) this is an adhesive transfer gun that is similar to the tape runner but it is primarily used by framers so it's pretty strong.  Since it's acid free, it's great for scrapbooking and the amount of tape you get  is impressive.  One roll will last a LONG time!

Acid Free
Papers without acid in the pulp when made. Acid in paper can increase its decay. See also Photo Safe, Lignin Free, and Archival Quality.

Acrylic paint
An oil free paint that is fast drying and water soluble. In scrapbooking, it is often used with stamps instead of ink.

Adhesives
Any substance that causes one thing to stick to another.

Album
A book of photographs or another word for scrapbook.

Alphabet Album
An album created with the ABC's in mind. Each page represents a letter in the alphabet. Very cute idea for a baby book.

Altering
To change the look of something, a book for example (usually vintage) to give it a more interesting look by adding embellishment.

Archival Quality
Materials, at the time of manufacturing, have had their acidic content considered safe for preserving.

B

Background Paper
The bottom layer of a scrapbook page or layout. Usually, it's best to use cardstock for a firmer foundation.

Basic Paper
This is lightweight paper and comes in a variety of colors and patterns. Price will vary with the pattern but is usually less expensive than the patterned cardstock.

Beads
A tiny, decorative object that has a hole for threading or stringing. I thread them with wire to keep them in place on a page.

Bone Folder
A flat utensil made of bone or plastic about the size of a letter opener. It's round at one end and comes to a point. It is used for scoring and folding paper with a sharp crease.

Border
Something decorative along the whole edge of your scrapbook page. Usually a title or a contrasting pattern.

Brad
Fasteners used to hold paper together. They come in all colors, shapes and sizes. An ideal way to fasten vellum paper to your layout without using an adhesive that would show through.

Calligraphy
Elegant, decorative handwriting. Considered to be an artform. An easy way to add calligraphy to your scrapbook pages with out having to master
an artform is to print a calligraphy font from your computer.

Card Making
To make greeting cards, usually with the same tools and paper used in scrapbooking. See Paper Crafts.

Cardstock
A heavyweight paper used in paper crafts. It is considered a must have in scrapbooking. Usually used as a base color or for matting. It’s available in a variety of weights from barely stiff to cardboard consistency.

Chalking
To apply chalk or pastels to paper. Sometimes used with templates, stencils, or stamping. I apply chalk or pastels with a cotton swab. Make up applicators work well too. It gives the color a subtle, grainy look. They come in every color you can think of and are usually found in art supply stores.

Charms
Small ornaments usually worn on chains but can be used similar to beads in scrapbooking.

Chip Board
Cardboard.  Sort of like what puzzles are made up of or the board on the back of legal pads. It comes in all shapes and sizes, even letters and words.  Used as an embellishment, it can be painted, decoupaged, or used as a stamp in scrapbooks.

Circle Cutter
Paper cutter that cut paper into circles and ovals. It can also cut photos but I don't recommend it.

Circle Journal
A scrapbook that is passed throughout a group of people. Each person completes a layout in a predetermined theme before passing it to the next person.

Clip Art
Small pictures that can be downloaded or found in book form that can be added to a scrapbook and paper crafts.

Color Blocking
A technique using blocks of paper (cardstock, patterned paper, vellum, etc.) or photos in your layout.

Corner Rounder
A paper punch that trims the corners of paper or photos into a nice rounded edge. Some corner rounders also punch out small shapes as well as rounding.

Craft Scissors
Also known as decorative scissors that have a pattern on the blade that leaves a decorative edge. There are hundreds of designs to choose from (ric-rac, scalloped, pinking shears, etc.). These are used for embellishments so I wouldn’t get crazy with them and cut a zig-zag edge to everything on your layout.

Crop
1. To trim or cut the excess out of a photo (ie. Too much sky or ground or somebody you don't know in the background). 2. A scrapbooking get together where everyone shares their ideas and socializes.

Crop Room
The place where a crop will take place. Usually in a home or scrapbook store.

Cutting Boards
A large mat used for free hand cutting with a rotary blade. Can be used for scrapbooking, but more commonly used in quilting. Found in fabric stores.
